Country Fair magazine was first published in the UK in 1951 to celebrate the ‘open air’. These original covers were illustrated by John Hanna, an Australian born artist who lived in the UK. He illustrated many covers with a range of animals and birds (and even some insects and aquatic life) from the British countryside over the 8 years that the magazine was published. To my knowledge, there are 7 covers with dog illustrations. These are genuine, original covers from actual magazines (not reproductions).

The New Yorker magazine was first published in 1925. Still going strong today, it covers a variety of topics from current affairs, biographical studies, reviews and events in the city, short fiction, commentaries on popular culture and cartoons. Its iconic covers are commissioned by well known artists, illustrators and cartoonists, on which dogs are a regular feature. These are genuine, original covers from actual magazines (not reproductions).

Tail-Waggers Club Advert
Founded in 1928 by Captain Horace Hobbs, the Tail-waggers’ Club was a charity that helped stray, sick and injured dogs by donating money to the Royal Veterinary College. At its peak in the mid 1930s, the club had almost a million dog members who, for the half a crown membership fee, received a special dog tag engraved with the motto “I help my pals”. The club published its own magazine from which this page, showing a range of Tail-waggers’ Club doggy equipment, is most likely taken.

John Bull magazine, November 1954
The John Bull magazine was first published in 1906. It was a hugely popular weekly and despite a circulation of over 700,000, it was finally closed in 1964 as it could not generate enough advertising revenue to cover its costs.
John Bull employed some of Britain's finest illustrators and this original cover, by Ronald Lampitt, depicts an idyllic rural farm, complete with the farmer, milk maid and working Collie. Throughout the 1950s, Lampitt’s covers for John Bull helped cheer up the ration burdened families of post-war Britain through his romanticised views of the countryside and its people.
