I love hearing rescue dog stories and I am endlessly intrigued by the connection between people and their dogs, but there’s something very special about people who take the plunge and let a rescue dog into their lives.

It’s a great leap of faith for both dog and human to give a previously unwanted or mistreated dog a chance of a safe and happy home. The love and trust of any dog is a huge privilege for a human to be given, but the loyalty of a rescue dog who has been given a second chance at happiness is a particularly poignant and treasured gift.

In offering us their devotion, a dog unwittingly gives us so much more… filling our lives with laughter with their funny habits and hilarious antics, getting us out and about and away from work and screens and being an unwavering friend through thick and thin.

It’s no surprise that one thing I hear over and over again is that, in retrospect, people are not sure whether it is they who have rescued the dog, or the dog that has rescued them!

How I made the original artwork

The original piece of art from which this fine art (giclee) print is taken is a mixed media artwork created mainly with collaged papers.

I make my my own papers for collage using monoprint techniques by hand-printing onto thin Japanese papers. These are translucent but very strong and work beautifully when layered together in a collaged piece. I add further details and texture using oil pastels, acrylic paint and coloured pencil.

You can read more about this process and see more progress pictures on my blog.
